This course is designed to answer the question: Why at a time of hostility towards Latinx people in the U.S. are Mexican filmmakers dominating the film industry? It will cover the intimate ties between Hollywood and Mexico/Mexicans. We will look at the filmmakers, cinematographers, and actors who were born in Mexico, but found success in Hollywood. We will screen their work, discuss the influence of Mexico on that work, and read scholars who investigate the careers, impact, and style of Mexicans in Hollywood. How have these Mexicans in Hollywood proved to the world their excellence, innovation, and profitability? Audiences, critics, and box office earnings all agree: Mexicans in Hollywood dominate.
