Eligibility & Requirements

Participation in January Term 2025 is limited to University of Virginia undergraduate students in Good Standing who are enrolled in an undergraduate degree program.  Applicants for a January Term Study Abroad program must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Visiting students are invited to apply for January Term. More information may be found at January Term Visiting Students.

Academic suspension begins at the end of the fall semester and takes precedence over any earlier plans to participate in January Term. Suspended students who enroll in a UVA January Term class will have their registration cancelled and tuition refunded.

Students may only register for one January Term course.

Students enrolled in a January Term course are expected to attend each class meeting.

University of Virginia December 2024 Degree Candidates may NOT count January Term work toward their degree.

January Term students are subject to the University of Virginia's academic, financial, and non-academic rules and regulations.

Grading Options

Changes in grading option must be made by 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 2nd.

Auditing is not allowed in January Term.

Schedule Changes

Students should select their courses carefully. The last day to add a class is Thursday, January 2, 2025. The last day to drop a class is Friday, January 3, 2025. Course changes will be made in SIS. A student who drops a January Term course by the first day of classes on Thursday, January 2, 2025 and does not add a new course will receive a full refund.

There will be NO refunds after January 2, 2025.*

Course withdrawal must be completed via email with the Office of Summer and Special Academic Programs. Course withdrawal is permitted up to January 3, 2025. There is NO refund for a course withdrawal.  Email januaryterm@virginia.edu to withdraw from a course.
