Studies the development and history of the thought, practice and goals of Zen Buddhism..This course surveys the history of Chan/Zen/Sŏn in East Asia, from its
beginnings to contemporary times. We will examine this tradition within Buddhist thought and practice, its instantiation in visual and literary arts, and its role within society. We will also consider the reception of Zen in the West, and how this shapes our understanding. Students will be exposed to both primary texts in translation and recent scholarship on Chan/Zen/Sŏn, supplemented with images, films, and experiential learning as appropriate.
