Through taking this course you’ll be able to identify the common themes and tropes regarding the representation of women, female sexuality, work and family present in popular Hollywood movies, and how your exposure to these tropes through the years of your life may have influenced your thinking about these issues.  We’ll accomplish this through examining a series of popular films, moving through the decades of sound film but paying particular attention to the present, looking specifically at issues important from the perspective of critical sex and gender studies.  These will include issues such as the way women are visually depicted; the kinds of narratives that most often feature women as central characters; the way women and men’s relationship to work and family are treated (the treatment of the domestic sphere); the issue of romance; female sexuality; issues of reproductive rights.
