This course offers an introduction to media, culture and society in postcolonial India. Taking into account the diversity of media forms and cultures in India, this course moves well beyond Hindi-language Bollywood films to introduce students to regional-language cinema (Tamil and Telugu cinema), television, documentary films, and other media and cultural productions. Readings are designed to help students situate various films and TV programs in relation to economic, political, and socio-cultural developments in post-independence India.
