This class explores film as cultural products; this is as objects produced in specific social, cultural, political, and intellectual contexts. Students will develop analytical skills to have a critical approach to audiovisual contents not only in terms of their esthetic value, but also in terms of the sociological issues they raise. We will begin by introducing the history of audiovisual media within the discipline of anthropology, its early uses in ethnographic research, and key concepts for the analysis of audiovisual media from an anthropological perspective. Then, we will move forward to analyze and discuss audiovisual media applying the analytical tools introduced in class.
